Crete's regions

The island of Crete is neatly divided into four prefectures, each with its own unique character. From east to west the regions are: Lassithi, Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania. Despite the many similarities, for instance the fact that each region contains mountain peaks of notable altitude as well as plains and coastal access, each area offers surprisingly diverse landscapes, microclimates as well as local lore and customs.
